Hill Day 2024

Committee Spotlight!

Meet ASHA member Kelly Farquharson. In this short interview, Kelly shares highlights about her experience serving on ASHA’s Scientific and Professional Education Board (SPEB).

How did you become involved with the Scientific and Professional Education Board?

Being on SPEB represents a full-circle moment for me. As a graduate student, I served as a NSSLHA Regional Councilor (RC), and each RC was assigned to an ASHA Board or Committee for leadership training experience. I was assigned to SPEB in 2004.

Years later, I was selected as the 2023 ASHA Convention Co-Chair for speech-language pathology. That role included a 1-year service term on SPEB to learn more about ASHA Professional Development processes. To now being serving as Chair of SPEB represents more than 20 years of opportunities to serve ASHA and its members.

What motivates you to give your time and expertise to ASHA?

I have been a very active member of NSSLHA or ASHA since 2001. I get a lot out of my membership because I have put a lot into it. I care deeply about the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology and know that, to continue to see growth and improvement in our fields, we need an active membership.

As a graduate student, I remember someone saying to me “you are ASHA.” I really internalized that and have also been in a privileged position to have the time to donate. Our fields are changing, and there are some intense demands on our time and scope. Working together and creating a support system is the only way forward.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining an ASHA board, council, or committee?

It can be hard to find time to add *one more thing* to our exceedingly long list of tasks and responsibilities, but it can be SO rewarding. I think another obstacle is an uncertainty about whether you have something to offer these boards, councils, or committees. Trust me. You do! Every ASHA member has something to offer.

ASHAs boards, councils, and committees cannot solve problems they don’t know about. You can make the difference in raising awareness for important real-life clinical and professional issues. In the meantime, if you are interested but are unsure of the time commitment or the content of the task, spend some time making sure you read the emails from ASHA, read the Board of Directors meeting minutes, read The ASHA Leader—what jumps out at you as something of particular interest? This may be a helpful place to start.
