Candidate for Board Member at Large in Speech-Language Pathology: Tedd Masiongale, CCC-SLP

Tedd Masiongale was raised an equal number of years in rural Tennessee and small-town Indiana. He relishes the many diverse experiences that have informed his education and personal culture across the years through his travels and work within and outside the United States. He completed his undergraduate work at Berea College, an institution with a unique mission and the first college in the South to accept women and Black students. Mr. Masiongale completed his graduate work in communication disorders at the University of South Dakota. 

Tedd’s clinical skills have been nourished by 31 years of practice across multiple settings with a primary focus on adult communication disorders—specifically neurological disorders, dysphagia, voice, trach, and vent care. Elective services in gender affirming voice care are a specialty area of practice.

Professionally, Mr. Masiongale is a clinical instructor in the speech-language pathology program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. In addition to supervising graduate students in the university clinic, he teaches courses on dysphagia and is the faculty advisor for the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH)  student group. He works PRN at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He holds licensure in three states and is a member of the Southwestern Illinois and Missouri Speech-Language Hearing Associations. He is LSVT certified. He serves on the Illinois Education Association Board of Directors representing higher education and is a member of the Higher Education Council. He is past Co-Chair of L’GASP, the LGBTQIA+ Caucus of AHSA. He has served on two ASHA boards—the Multicultural Issues Board and the Continuing Education Board—and has served multiple times on the ASHA Convention Program Committee. Mr. Masiongale was a collaborative participant in the development of an ASHA FAQ on gender affirming and voice communication. He has presented and published. He received NSSLHA’s Honors of the Association and has been recognized as an ASHA Diversity Champion. He previously served his alma mater, Berea College, as a member of their Alumni Executive Board.

Special life experiences in audiology and speech-language pathology include completing a graduate practicum in audiology; working two summers in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the intensive Aphasia InteRACT Program; and supporting graduate students as a mentor in two of ASHA’s mentoring programs: (1) the Student to Empowered Professional (S.T.E.P.) and (2) the LGBTQ+ Students of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSDSA) program.

Mr. Masiongale’s work–life balance includes spending time with his partner, family, and two dogs. He enjoys outdoor recreation and is a strong advocate for St. Louis City as a member of Citizens for Greater St. Louis.
