Candidate for Board Member at Large in Speech-Language Pathology: H. Sheen Chiou, CCC-SLP

Hsinhuei Sheen Chiou (pronounced “shinwhey sheen cho”) (she/her/她), PhD, CCC-SLP, holds a bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language and Literature, with a minor in English Language and Literature, from Soochow University, Taiwan. She obtained a post-baccalaureate certificate in CSD from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, a master of arts degree in communication disorders from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a PhD in speech-language-hearing sciences, with a minor in psychology, from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

Dr. Chiou is currently a professor and department chair in the Department of Speech, Hearing, and Rehabilitation Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Although her multifaceted role encompasses administration, teaching, clinical practice, and research, her primary focus and passion lie in patient-centered language and cognitive-communication intervention for older adults.

Dr. Chiou has been recognized as a Distinguished Faculty Scholar by Minnesota State University, Mankato. Beyond academia, Dr. Chiou serves as a member of the Mankato/North Mankato Act on Alzheimer’s Action Team and Minnesota Connect Aphasia Now.

Dr. Chiou exemplifies a steadfast commitment to service. As co-president of the Asian Pacific Islander Speech-Language-Hearing Caucus, she passionately advocates for speech, language, and hearing health within the global Asian and Pacific Islander communities. Under her leadership, the Caucus has not only expanded its membership but has also cultivated and established an inclusive, supportive community and programs (e.g., API Caucus Research and Clinical Symposium, Scholarship, Speaker Series, Antiracism Learning Community, Graduate School Panel, Career Panel, Social Hour, Mentorship). With 23 years of ASHA membership, Dr. Chiou actively collaborates with ASHA leaders and multicultural constituency groups to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her service extends to the ASHA Convention Topic Committee and the Academy of Neurological Communication Disorders and Sciences. She serves as the Minnesota Speech-Language-Hearing Association vice president for professional development.
