Speech-Language Pathology ICD-10-CM Code Changes for 2027

The following new and revised ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification) codes are effective October 1, 2026, for fiscal year (FY) 2027. ICD-10-CM codes are updated annually. Note: Always check with payers regarding coverage of new or revised ICD-10-CM codes. Coding changes may not always alter payer coverage decisions for specific conditions.

Summary of Changes

The 2027 ICD-10-CM deletes the code related to frontotemporal dementia and revises the codes for other frontotemporal neurocognitive disorder and pneumonitis.

The following list of changes only outlines the latest updates to the codes. Frontotemporal Dementia

ASHA Notes

• Frontotemporal dementia (G31.09) has been deleted as a distinct ICD-10-CM diagnosis description effective beginning 2027.
• Other frontotemporal neurocognitive disorder has been revised from G31.90 to G31.09.
• As a result, G31.09, which previously described frontotemporal dementia, will now describe other frontotemporal neurocognitive disorder beginning with the 2027 ICD-10-CM code set.
• SLPs may report the revised code G31.09 when describing frontotemporal dementia
• SLPs typically do not assign the codes from the G- series. However, SLPs may report G31.09 as the medical diagnosis when applicable.
• SLPs may also use this revised ICD-10-CM code to provide additional details regarding an underlying or coexisting condition to the speech, language cognitive, swallowing, or voice disorder.
• Consult the medical record or referring physician when necessary for additional information on relevant diagnoses before reporting G31.09 as the medical diagnosis in addition to the treating diagnosis on the claim.

Pneumonitis Due to Solids and Liquids

ASHA Notes

• SLPs typically do not assign codes from the J96-series, however, SLPs may report the revised codes when reporting pneumonitis as a medical diagnosis.
• SLPs may use these updated ICD-10-CM codes to provide additional details regarding an underlying or coexisting condition to the speech, language cognitive, swallowing, or voice disorder.
• Consult the medical record or referring physician before reporting these medical diagnoses in addition to the treating diagnosis on the claim.
