Provide Input on ASHA's Advocacy Priorities

Curious about how ASHA’s advocacy priorities are set each year? Decisions are primarily based on member input! When you complete the online survey you’re providing direction for legislative and regulatory efforts—at both the state and federal level—that ASHA will advocate on next year. Volunteer members of ASHA’s Government Affairs and Public Policy Board will then use this information to draft the 2025 Public Policy Agenda. This is your opportunity to share what issues are important to you and where you think ASHA’s advocacy efforts should be directed. The survey closes on June 7, 2024. Learn more about ASHA’s current advocacy priorities in the 2024 Public Policy Agenda.

Capitol Hill Day 2024 a HUGE Success!

Volunteer members from the Board of Directors, Committee of Ambassadors, and ASHA-PAC Board gathered for ASHA’s annual Capitol Hill Day on May 8. These members represented 41 states and territories and participated in more than 130 congressional meetings to advocate for audiologists, SLPs, assistants, and the people they serve. Highlights from the day included introduction of a resolution supporting the goals and ideals of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month (NSLHM); presentation of the ASHA Public Service Award to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA); and an opportunity for members to attend the House Ways and Means Committee markup where the Committee approved legislation providing a two-year extension of Medicare telehealth services. Help keep up the momentum by taking action for your profession and make an impact during NSLHM!

Key Committees Approve Two-Year Telehealth Extension

The House Ways and Means Committee has approved the Preserving Telehealth, Hospital, and Ambulance Access Act (H.R. 8261), which includes a provision providing a two-year extension of Medicare telehealth authority for audiologists and SLPs. ASHA submitted a statement [PDF] supporting various bills, including the Expanded Telehealth Access Act (H.R. 3875/S. 2880), which would add audiologists and SLPs as permanent telehealth providers. Separately, the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s subcommittee on Health also forwarded a two-year extension as part of H.R. 7623, the Telehealth Modernization Act, for which ASHA submitted a statement for the record [PDF].

This week, ASHA members Dr. Elizabeth Grillo, CCC-SLP, and Suzanne Younker, CCC-A, were panelists in a congressional briefing and met with representatives to make the case for permanent telehealth authority. Although we don’t expect Congress to take final action until December (when current telehealth authority expires), we need you to keep up your excellent advocacy efforts and let your federal representatives know that you should be a permanent Medicare telehealth provider!

Help Update Medicare Payment for Services

Randomly selected audiologists and SLPs in private and group practices will receive an email invitation from Mathematica, a survey administrator, to participate in the clinician practice information (CPI) survey. This effort will collect updated and accurate data on practice costs, which are a key element of clinician payment. This information has not been updated in over 15 years! Real-world input is critical to collect current data to ensure accurate payment for your services. Visit ASHA's website for more information.

Congress Recognizes National Speech-Language-Hearing Month

Representatives Kat Cammack and Troy Carter introduced H. Res. 1195, a resolution that bsupports the goals and ideals of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month. The pair founded and co-chair the Unified Voices Caucus, which advocates for individuals facing communication challenges and primarily focuses on stuttering.
