Survey Says...Results From the IPP/IPE Survey

September 13, 2023

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the Interprofessional Practice (IPP) and Interprofessional Education (IPE) Survey conducted by ASHA in May 2023.

Background: The survey was completed by 195 individuals who are Continuing Education Administrators (CEAs) and CE Content Consultants. Our goal was to assess the status of IPP and IPE within the context of ASHA’s Strategic Pathway objectives. ASHA is dedicated to advancing IPE and IPP to improve the collaboration and practice of its members.

IPP/IPE Objective: ASHA’s Strategic Pathway objective in IPP/IPE is to have academic programs incorporate IPE approaches for personnel preparation. Additionally, both students and ASHA members are encouraged to participate in interprofessional collaborative practice (IPP).

Survey Results: According to the survey, many of the respondents indicated that their courses already include concepts related to IPP and IPE. This suggests that these ideas are being integrated into the education and training of ASHA members.

See graphics below for the survey results.

To what extent are concepts related to IPP included into the content of current or future CE courses?

To what extent are concepts related to IPE included into the content of current or future CE courses?

Use of Interprofessional CE Planning Principles: The survey respondents were asked, “To what extent does your continuing education course planning process include each of the following?”

The respondents answered four questions based on the principles outlined in the Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education’s planning framework. Responses to the four planning components follow:

Incorporation of 1 or more of the interprofessional competencies to include: values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and/or teams/teamwork

An opportunity for learners to learn with, from, and about each other

Professionals from 2 or more professions

Professionals who are reflective of the target audience

We commend the efforts of those involved in designing continuing education experiences that equip ASHA members to engage in IPP.
