State Association Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering at your state association is an excellent way to gain experience and build your volunteering portfolio. Volunteer opportunities can range from micro-volunteering to joining a committee of interest to running for leadership positions on the state association’s board of directors.

State associations are welcome to share their volunteer opportunities for posting on ASHA's website.

Volunteer position #1: Nominations Membership Chair

Type: Virtual

Application deadline: Open

Description: You will chair monthly hour-long meetings. This committee seeks out volunteers for board, committee, or individual positions and is responsible for preparation, distribution, and collection of election materials.

Main role: Leadership, mentoring

Term: 2 years; reappointment is an option

Travel: None

Required experience: Work experience as an SLP (we can train you on the specific aspects of the role)

Volunteer position #2: Treasurer

Type: Virtual

Application deadline: Open

Description: The Treasurer serves as liaison between the WSLHA office and the Board in terms of financial reporting, overseeing accounts receivable and payable, and overall financial-related goals in the association. As Treasurer, you attend all Board meetings and monthly Executive Committee meetings. You will oversee any task force created within the Budge Committee and collaborate with committees organizing fundraising campaigns or with income stream activities for WSLHA. As Treasurer, you will also ensure proper filing of IRS and Washington State tax information.

Main role: Leadership, financial oversight

Term: 1 year, with an option to run for a full 3-year term

Travel: None

Required experience: Willingness to learn and/or experience with budgeting, accounting and investments; Ability to be a good facilitator and work with team members; Familiar with, or willing to become familiar with WSLHA and WSLHA Bylaws, Polices & Procedures, and Strategic Planning.

Volunteering hours: 2-6 hours/month, depending on meeting and reporting schedules

Volunteer position #3: Communications Committee Chair

Type: Virtual

Application deadline: Open

Description: The Chair will lead the Communications Committee to achieve goals of the committee, upholding and projecting the mission and vision of WSLHA. As Chair, you will help create and implement content to engage members and potential members through the use of social media, newsletters, and other platforms. You will also develop other communication systems to facilitate interaction with the Board and business office as needed, and document and report on committee activity.

Main role: Leadership, mentoring

Term: 2 years ending December 31, 2027; reappointment is an option

Travel: None

Required experience: Is knowledgeable about the mission and vision of WSLHA; Effective communication skills; Knowledge of social media platforms and public outreach

Volunteer position #4: Committee Members

Type: Virtual

Application deadline: Open

Description: As a member of WSLHA’s Financial Committee/Fundraising Task Force, or of the Communications Committee, you will serve in a role with leadership development potential. You will collaborate with others in monthly hour-long meetings and complete between-meeting tasks related to fundraising and/or outreach activities to promote the Mission and Vision of WSLHA. The results of your work will enhance member benefits.

Main role: Leadership Development; Member Outreach; Fundraising

Required experience: Familiar with general activities of WSLHA, our Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan; Good organizational and communication skills; Self-starting and creative

Volunteer position #1: Member At Large - Audiology

Type: Hybrid

Application deadline: Open

Description: You will serve as a member of the WyoSHA board; attend meetings; and inform the board about concerns or observations in audiology for the state of Wyoming.

Main role: Advocacy, audiology

Term: 2 years; no end date

Travel: None

Required experience: Member of WyoSHA as an audiologist

Volunteering hours: 2 hours quarterly for meetings, other requirements dependent on activity

Volunteer position #2: Convention Planning Chair

Type: Hybrid

Application deadline: Open

Description: You will help the president-elect to plan an in-person convention for SLPs and audiologists in Wyoming. You may also help with organization; act as a liaison to the board and the vendors; and arrange speakers with support of the board.

Main role: Professional development

Term: 1 year or more; no end date

Travel: None

Required experience: Member of WyoSHA interested in organizing and facilitating an in-person event

Volunteering hours: Quarterly board meetings (required) and variable hours throughout term based on needs of the position

Volunteer position #3: President Elect

Type: Hybrid

Description: You will  represent the president in case of emergency, succeed the President for the remainder of the term in office if President is unable to complete term, be a voting member of the Executive Board, member of the convention planning team

Main role: Leadership, conference planning

Term: 1-2 years

Travel: No

Required experience: Member of WyoSHA who currently provides audiology or speech language pathology services in Wyoming

Volunteer position #4: SLPA/Audiology Techician Representative

Type: Hybrid

Description: You will serve as a non-voting member of the Executive board, inform the association about important issues with the roles and responsibilities of individuals working as SLPA's or Audiology Tech's in the state

Main role: Advocacy

Term: 1 year term; reappointment is an option

Travel: None

Required experience:  Experience providing services as an SLPA or Aud Tech in Wyoming
