Why should ASHA members approve a slate that includes you as Vice President for Standards and Ethics in Audiology for the Board of Directors?
Amanda Chiao, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, is an Assistant Professor and Chief of Audiology at Texas Tech Health El Paso in the Department of Surgery–Division of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and is a practicing pediatric audiologist at El Paso Children’s Hospital. As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Chiao’s clinical and research expertise is in (a) treating individuals with oto-vestibulotoxicity as well as pediatric dizziness and concussion and (b) improving otologic health access for medically under-recognized populations. Her clinical and research program go hand in hand, and it is her mission to solve community-driven problems that impact the field of pediatric audiology.
Dr. Chiao has had the opportunity to serve her profession through ASHA from an early start, beginning with a serving on the Financial Planning Board from 2015 to 2018. Following that, she served on the Board of Ethics starting in 2019 and became the Chair in 2023–2024. These early and ongoing experiences through her work with ASHA have given Dr. Chiao firsthand knowledge of the growth of ASHA’s values and strategic initiatives, experience with high-level programmatic leadership within professional organizations, and understanding for clinicians and educators who make up ASHA’s membership.
Closer to home, Dr. Chiao also serves her community first. In 2022, she and her team developed the first and only comprehensive bi-national pediatric audiology and otolaryngology program for their region. She now spends her time optimizing pediatric services along the United States–Mexico border through parent and provider education, outreach, and the creation of clinical care pathways for all children.
Dr. Chiao’s professional and day-to-day clinical experiences drive her to now use her voice to lead organizations and programs toward balanced decision making and consideration of the community perspective. Dr. Chiao’s goal is to promote professional standards, ethics, and policies while valuing the realistic barriers that exist in clinical practice and those shared among all ASHA professionals.
