Unraveling the Impact and Crucial Role of Social Determinants of Health

March 22, 2024

Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) encompass the multifaceted aspects of our lives—where we reside, work, play, worship, and age. These non-medical factors influence our health and well-being, often surpassing the impact of direct medical services. Let’s delve into their significance.

People with communication disorders often experience poorer health and health care outcomes than do those without disorders. SDOH play a pivotal role in these disparities. Audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) strive to provide person-centered, culturally responsive care. By systematically considering SDOH, clinicians can broaden their perspective and dismantle barriers to effective services.

Real-Life Scenario

Imagine a high school student with a developmental language disorder. He’s frequently caught dozing off during class. The classroom teacher attributes it to disinterest in the subject, assuming he’s trying to avoid work. However, the keen-eyed reading specialist notices something peculiar—the student is discreetly tucking paper towels and napkins into his backpack. The SLP steps in and suggests a screening for social determinants of health. During their next session, they discuss the student’s home environment. The truth emerges: The student and his younger sister are currently living in their mother’s car. He stays awake at night to watch over his sibling, leading to daytime fatigue and classroom drowsiness.

Bridging the Gap: Taking Action

Armed with this insight, the SLP collaborates with the school team. Adjustments are made to the student’s schedule, including adding one free period in the morning. But that’s not all—the SLP connects the student with the school’s social worker. Together, they explore community resources, housing assistance, and emotional support.
