Ensuring Equity: Unpacking Disproportionality in Speech-Language Services

Wednesday, December 11, 2024 | 7:00–8:30 p.m., ET

Significant disproportionality occurs when students of certain racial and ethnic groups are identified for special education, placed in more restrictive education settings, and disciplined at higher rates than their peers. School based speech-language pathologists play a critical role in recognizing significant disproportionality and implementing assessment practices that do not over or under-identify students for speech-language services. This panel discussion will define factors that lead to significant disproportionality, the role of the school based SLP in recognizing practices that can lead to this trend, and ways to address it in their assessment practices.

Following this town hall, participants will be able to:

  • State the three main factors that lead to significant disproportionality
  • Identify one way to modify your assessments to mitigate significant disproportionality in special education
  • Promote equitable service delivery with interprofessional education and practice

This event will be recorded and is eligible for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). A Certificate of Attendance will be provided to those who attend the full live presentation.
