Description

The purpose of this position is to help assure that ASHA’s activities create value to the Association’s three constituent groups (i.e., audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, hearing scientists) by working in partnership with volunteer leaders and other members of the Facilitating Team and serving as the National Office “point person” for issues related to speech-language pathology.

Responsibilities

  1. Identify and analyze internal and external trends and issues that impact the profession of speech-language pathology and work to assure timely decision making to effectively position the profession relative to opportunities and challenges.
  2. Provide strategic direction and professional, technical, and management leadership as a member of the Facilitating Team in determining office-wide policies and procedures to enhance the ASHA National Office work efforts in a manner consistent with a member-centric culture.
  3. Facilitate decisions related to strategic direction and identification of priorities, and provide professional, technical, and management leadership to: the National Office Speech-Language Pathology unit and volunteer leaders (including committees, boards, and councils); other programmatic areas (e.g., Government Relations and Public Policy, Special Interest Divisions and International Liaison); and major projects (e.g., focused initiatives) as assigned.
  4. Assure effective development, implementation, and monitoring of budgets for the: speech-language pathology, government relations and public policy, special interest divisions and international liaison, and specialty recognition programs; and major projects (e.g., focused initiatives) as assigned.
  5. Provide leadership and consultation on the development of programs to demonstrate the worth of ASHA members’ services and activities to decision makers at the federal, state, and local levels and in the reimbursement arena.
  6. Serve as liaison and/or ASHA representative to various external organizations to represent the interests of ASHA members and individuals with communication and related disorders.
  7. Coach, mentor, and facilitate the staff professional development efforts to improve their skills in order to enhance their contributions to accomplishing ASHA’s objectives.
  8. Determine staffing needs; hire, orient, coach, and evaluate other management, professional, and administrative staff in the speech-language pathology unit; government relations and public policy; special interests divisions and international liaison units.

Qualifications

Knowledge Typically Acquired Through

  • Graduate degree in speech-language pathology; doctorate degree in speech-language pathology preferred.
  • Approximately 10 years of experience in the profession of speech-language pathology with some management experience
  • Management of budgets of $500,000 or more
  • Motivating, developing, and directing staff of greater than 10 to achieve organizational objectives.

  • Deep understanding of and commitment to serving the needs of speech-language pathologists
  • Understanding of the research and practice of the profession of speech-language pathology
