State Association Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering at your state association is an excellent way to gain experience and build your volunteering portfolio. Volunteer opportunities can range from micro-volunteering to joining a committee of interest to running for leadership positions on the state association’s board of directors.

Volunteer position #1: President-Elect

Type: Hybrid

Application deadline: August 31, 2026

Description: This role term is from January 2027 to December 2028 as President-Elect and from January 2029 to December 2030 as President.
The President-Elect serves as the successor to the President, working closely with current leadership while preparing to assume the Association's highest office. This role involves learning presidential responsibilities, overseeing the Committee on State-Based Advocacy Networks, and serving as presiding officer in the President's absence, while developing the leadership skills and relationships necessary for a successful presidential term.

Main role: TAASLP Executive Committee

Term: January 2027–December 2030: 2 years as President-Elect and 2 years as President (4 years total)

Travel: Yes, most meetings are held virtually, but there is an in-person expectation to attend the annual state convention and the annual state Day on the Hill

Required experience: Active TAASLP membership for a minimum of one year immediately preceding election; leadership experience within professional organizations; strong communication and organizational skills; strategic planning abilities; knowledge of legislative and advocacy issues affecting the professions

Volunteering hours: 10–15 hrs/month, 15–20 hours/month during peak periods

Volunteer position #2: Secretary/Treasurer

Type: Hybrid

Application deadline: August 31, 2026

Description: The Secretary/Treasurer is responsible for maintaining the Association’s official records, documenting meetings and decisions, and ensuring accurate distribution of meeting minutes and membership information. In partnership with the management team, the Secretary/Treasurer oversees the Association’s financial operations, including budget development, fund management, and financial reporting. This officer also serves as a voting member of the Executive Council and contributes to organizational governance and fiscal oversight.

Volunteer position #3: Vice President of Legislative Affairs

Type: Hybrid

Description: The Vice President of Legislative Affairs serves as the lead advocate and policy liaison for TAASLP. This role involves monitoring legislative and regulatory developments, coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts, and working closely with the Board, STAR, SEAL, StAMP, members, and external stakeholders to advance TAASLP’s policy priorities.

Volunteer position #4: Vice President of Convention

Type: Hybrid

Application deadline: August 31, 2026

Description: The Vice President of Convention is responsible for the end-to-end planning and execution of the annual association convention, including the development of continuing education programming that meets both member needs and accreditation requirements. This role oversees convention logistics, speaker coordination, and budget management while collaborating with the Student Delegate to integrate student-focused sessions into the event. As a member of the Executive Council, the Vice President also contributes to broader organizational governance through active participation in strategic decision-making and budget approvals.

This position may be shared by 2 individuals; 1 focusing on the educational programming and speakers and 1 focusing on the exhibitors and events

Volunteer position #5: Student Delegate

Type: Hybrid

Description: The Student Delegate serves as the primary liaison between the association and the statewide student body, ensuring student interests and concerns are represented during Executive Council decision-making and budget approvals. This role is responsible for coordinating all student-focused programming for the annual convention and leading outreach initiatives to increase student engagement in association activities. By providing a dedicated student perspective to leadership, the Student Delegate helps shape organizational initiatives to better support the needs of future professionals.

Required experience: Active TAASLP student membership in good standing; Current enrollment in an audiology, speech-language pathology, or communication sciences and disorders program in Tennessee; leadership abilities and effective communication skills; ability to connect with multiple student groups across the state; enthusiasm for professional development and association involvement

Volunteering hours: ~2 hours/week; increasing to 2-3 hours/week in the 3 months prior to convention

Number of volunteers: 1-2; 2 students may serve in this role: 1 graduate student and 1 undergraduate student

Volunteer position #1: Nominations Membership Chair

Type: Virtual

Description: You will chair monthly hour-long meetings. This committee seeks out volunteers for board, committee, or individual positions and is responsible for preparation, distribution, and collection of election materials.

Volunteer position #2: Communications Committee Chair

Type: Virtual

Description: The Chair will lead the Communications Committee to achieve goals of the committee, upholding and projecting the mission and vision of WSLHA. As Chair, you will help create and implement content to engage members and potential members through the use of social media, newsletters, and other platforms. You will also develop other communication systems to facilitate interaction with the Board and business office as needed, and document and report on committee activity.

Volunteer position #3: Committee Members

Description: As a member of WSLHA’s Financial Committee/Fundraising Task Force, or of the Communications Committee, you will serve in a role with leadership development potential. You will collaborate with others in monthly hour-long meetings and complete between-meeting tasks related to fundraising and/or outreach activities to promote the Mission and Vision of WSLHA. The results of your work will enhance member benefits.

Description: You will serve as a member of the WyoSHA board; attend meetings; and inform the board about concerns or observations in audiology for the state of Wyoming.

Description: You will help the president-elect to plan an in-person convention for SLPs and audiologists in Wyoming. You may also help with organization; act as a liaison to the board and the vendors; and arrange speakers with support of the board.
