Vice President for Standards and Ethics in Audiology

Valeria Roberts Matlock, EdD, CCC-A, is a professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville, Tennessee.  Dr. Matlock teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in anatomy and physiology, audiology and aural rehabilitation, professional issues, and speech and hearing science. In addition to a demanding academic workload, for the past 25 years, Dr. Matlock has coordinated and provided audiological diagnostic services to underserved populations across the lifespan in the TSU Audiology Clinic. At TSU, Dr. Matlock also serves as the Director of Faculty Development in Pedagogy at TSU.

Prior to joining the faculty at TSU in 1995, Dr. Matlock worked as a clinical audiologist and clinical supervisor at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center in Nashville. There, she provided diagnostic and aural rehabilitation, as well as educational audiology services, to adults and children, and served as a member of the adult cochlear implant team. 

Dr. Matlock earned her master’s degree in audiology and her EdD in curriculum and instruction from TSU. In her research, Dr. Matlock studies audiological outcomes of individuals with sickle cell anemia and auditory processing deficits. Dr. Matlock is a sub-recipient investigator of a U.S Department of Education grant with Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Matlock has been an ASHA member for thirty-three years and a lifelong community engagement and enrichment participant. She served for seven years on the Tennessee licensure board for Communication Disorders and Sciences, as member and vice chair. Additionally, Dr. Matlock is past president of the Tennessee Academy of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (TAASLP), past vice president and convention chair for the Tennessee Association of Audiologists, and past chair of the Tennessee Academy of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology Foundation. Dr. Matlock is the immediate past chair of the ASHA Continuing Education Board.
