Vice President for Standards and Ethics in Speech-Language Pathology
Carol C. Dudding, PhD, CCC-SLP, is Professor at James Madison University. Dr. Dudding has presented and published nationally and internationally on her research in e-supervision, tele-speech, distance education, and simulation. She co-authored a book on best practices in simulation in the communication sciences and disorders (CSD) discipline. Dr. Dudding is the founder of an online master’s degree program in speech-language pathology developed in 2005 to meet the needs of qualified professionals in the public schools. The program continues to provide access to non-traditional students with an expanded scope and outreach.
Dr. Dudding has a long history of service and commitment to the professions. Her involvement with ASHA began in 2005 in service to SIG 11, Administration and Supervision, as clinical education administrator and then co-coordinator. During that time, she was fortunate to be mentored by exceptional and committed individuals. These relationships served as a foundation that has allowed her to grow in her leadership to ASHA, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD), the National Academies of Practice, and the university community.
Carol served on ASHA’s Ad Hoc Committee on Supervisory Training that eventually led to requirements for training for clinical educators. In her role as CAPCSD’s Vice President for Standards, Credentials, and Clinical Education, Dr. Dudding collaborated with others to develop a series of e-learning modules offered at no charge to shared community of clinical educators. This was a complex project that worked closely with members of ASHA’s Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, Council on Academic Accreditation, and Professional Development. She established strong working relationships by serving as CAPCSD liaison to the CFCC and the CAA. As the 2021 President of CAPCSD, she continued to engage with ASHA leadership on important issues related to clinical and academic education—including diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) response and the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Dudding is also recognized as Distinguished Scholar and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, serving on the organization’s Executive Board from 2016 to 2021.
