We recently let Providers know about a change to the Standards for ASHA CE Providers. Specifically, we’ve updated Standard 1.2.7 to the following:
Ensure that those involved in continuing education uphold high standards of conduct, provide learning experiences that reflect participants’ varied backgrounds and needs, take measures to support full and fair participation, and foster an environment where all individuals feel respected, supported, and valued.
The original text was as follows:
Ensure that those involved in the continuing education process (including course planners and instructors) demonstrate high standards of professional conduct, respect the rights of individuals served, and foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.
We made this change after realizing that we hadn’t clearly defined what “fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion” looks like in practice. Go to the ASHA CE Provider Community for more details (login required).
To support Providers, we’ve developed a resource, Creating Respectful and Supportive CE Experiences, which offers examples of how you might demonstrate compliance with this Standard. Many of these practices may already be part of your program, and others may not apply to your specific context.
These examples are not required—they’re intended to serve as a helpful guide. This resource can support your team in identifying areas for enhancement and ensuring that your CE program reflects inclusive values in meaningful ways.
