ASHA Continuing Education Units (ASHA CEUs)

The ASHA Continuing Education Unit (ASHA CEU) is a type of continuing education credit that the ASHA Continuing Education (CE) Registry awards. This credit is available exclusively to Registry users who have successfully completed courses registered by ASHA Approved CE Providers.

ASHA CE Providers plan and deliver courses offering ASHA CEUs according to:

• The ASHA CE Standards (“Standards”)
• The ASHA CE Policies (“Policies”)

These Standards and Policies represent best practices in adult education and instructional design. They ensure that the content and learning outcomes directly relate to the contemporary science and practice of audiology and speech-language pathology. The course content and level must also surpass that required for initial ASHA certification.

Using Your ASHA CEUs

ASHA CEUs are accepted by ASHA Certification and by most state regulatory agencies that require continuing education for licensure renewal.

Accrediting bodies recognize ASHA CEUs because of

• ASHA CE’s Standards and Policies for ASHA Approved CE Providers and
• the oversight that the ASHA CE Program provides.

Each U.S. state—not ASHA—regulates state licensure of audiologists and speech-language pathologists. Contact the regulatory agency in your state directly for information on renewal requirements.

Calculating ASHA CEUs

This chart provides some examples of translating the number of ASHA CEUs into an amount of time (in minutes/hours).

An “ASHA CEU” is just one form of continuing education unit (CEU). The term “CEU” is a nationally recognized standard unit of measurement for a person’s participation in a continuing education activity. The definition of the term “CEU” is set and maintained by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).

Who Can Earn ASHA CEUs

ASHA CEUs can be earned only by those who

• are eligible to join the ASHA CE Registry;
• pay the Registry fee for the year in which the course was taken;
• complete a course that an ASHA Approved CE Provider* has registered for ASHA CEUs; and
• indicate to the Provider that they wish to have their information sent to the ASHA CE Registry so that they can earn ASHA CEUs.

*Only ASHA Approved CE Providers can offer courses and report individuals to earn ASHA CEUs. Individuals cannot self-report to the ASHA CE Registry. 

The Difference Between ASHA CEUs and Other Types of Continuing Education Credit

Many other types of CE credits exist in the marketplace. ASHA CE is the only entity that awards ASHA CEUs for courses registered by ASHA Approved CE Providers. ASHA does not regulate other types of continuing education credit. ASHA Approved CE Providers must ensure that their organization and courses continually meet the stringent criteria that ASHA CE sets forth in their Standards and Policies.
