The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Texas. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • Supervised clinical practicum
  • Supervised professional experience

Both

  • National exam
  • Jurisprudence exam

Continuing Education: 20 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Texas is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice. Other restrictions apply. Notification of telehealth services shall also be provided to the client, the guardian, the caregiver, and the multidisciplinary team, if appropriate. The notification shall include, but not be limited to: the right to refuse telehealth services and options for service delivery.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: No provisions.

A state license is required to work in Texas schools.

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • License with Board
  • High school diploma and 20-hour Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation course or bachelor’s degree
  • The supervising audiologist may not supervise more than a total of four interns and/or assistants if the assistant holds a bachelor’s degree or no more than two interns and/or assistants if an assistant holds a high school diploma or equivalent.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

ASHA Pathway: The ASHA C-SLPA is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure.

Health Care Setting

  • License with Board
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 24 semester hours in speech-language pathology
  • 25 hours of clinical observation
  • 25 hours of clinical assisting
  • The supervising speech-language pathologist must have two years of experience and may not supervise more than a total of four interns and/or assistants.

School Setting

  • State license

Continuing education: 20 hours every two years
