The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Pennsylvania. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists who dispense hearing aids must obtain a hearing aid dealer certificate but are not required to take the qualifying examination.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • 375 hours of supervised clinical practicum

Both

  • Supervised clinical experience
  • National exam

Continuing Education: 20 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Pennsylvania is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Pennsylvania allows for telehealth, but there is no licensing board rules specific to the practice of audiology and speech-language pathology. Providers must generally adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: Nonresidents who are licensed in another state with equivalent standards may provide services for no more than five days in any calendar year in cooperation with a state-licensed practitioner.

Speech-Language Pathologist: Special Education Speech-Language Pathologist Impaired PK-12

  • Master’s degree
  • Praxis I core test
  • Praxis II
  • Instruction I initial certificate

Speech-Language Pathologist: Educational Specialist Certification PK-12

  • Master's degree
  • Praxis II
  • Practicum with school-aged children
  • Education Specialist 1

Continuing Education: 180 hours every five years

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist

  • State license
  • Pre-service training
  • To provide services in preschool, there is a required training to maintain a PDE certificate.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Pennsylvania public school certification

Continuing Education: 24 hours of training every year

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • One of the following:
    • 30 semester hours or equivalent
    • In practice since 1989 under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist, audiologist, or teacher of the hearing impaired
  • A supervising licensed audiologist may not supervise more than three assistants at one time.

School Setting

  • Determined at District level

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • State license
  • One of the following:
    • 30 semester hours or equivalent
    • In practice since 1989 under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist, audiologist, or teacher of the hearing impaired
    • In practice since 1989 under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist, audiologist, or teacher of the hearing impaired in another state or DC with assistant requirements substantially equivalent to Pennsylvania’s
  • A supervising licensed speech-language pathologist may not supervise more than three assistants at one time.

School Setting

  • Determined at district level

Continuing Education: 7.5 hours per year
