The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Ohio. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree
  • 350 hours of clinical experience
  • 2,000 hours of clinical extern experience

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • 375 hours of supervised clinical practicum
  • Nine-month full-time (or part-time equivalent) postgraduate professional experience

Both

  • National exam

Continuing Education: 20 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Ohio is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Allowable service delivery models:

  • Store-and-forward model/electronic transmission is an asynchronous electronic transmission of stored clinical data from one location to another usually by the internet via email and fax.
  • Synchronous clinician interactive model is a real-time interaction between the provider and patient that may occur via encrypted audio and video transmission over telecommunication links including, but not limited to, videoconferencing.

Restrictions:

  • Notification of telehealth services should be provided to the client, the guardian, or the caregiver, if appropriate. The notification shall include the right to refuse telehealth services, options for service delivery, and instructions on filing and resolving complaints.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: Providers licensed in another state with ASHA CCCs may practice for not more than one period of 30 consecutive calendar days in any year and must file a statement to the Board in advance.

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist: Pupil Services Registration

Continuing Education: Maintenance of state license

A state license is required to work in early intervention in Ohio.

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting: Audiology Aide

  • High school diploma
  • Training requirements as set out in application
  • A licensed audiologist shall not supervise any more than two aides unless approved by the Board.

School Setting

  • Not regulated

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant
