ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • Supervised clinical practicum

Both

  • Supervised professional experience
  • National exam

Continuing Education: 30 hours every three years

ASLP-IC: North Carolina is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice. Notification of telepractice services shall be provided to the patient and guardian if the patient is a minor. The notification shall include the right to refuse telepractice services and options for alternate services delivery.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: No provisions.

Audiologist: Special Services Personnel

  • One of the following:
    • State license
    • ASHA CCC
    • Master’s degree

Speech-Language Pathologist: Special Services Personnel

  • State license

Continuing Education: Audiologist: 7.5 units of renewal credit every five years; speech-language pathologist: 30 hours every three years

A state license is required to work in early intervention in North Carolina.

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • Registered with Board
  • High school diploma
  • Letter of certification of competency by supervisor
  • Assistants conducting pure tone audiometry must have completed a Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationists course or a program with equivalent certification requirements. If the assistant has completed training under the NC Hearing Aid Dealers and Fitters Board (NCHADFB), then proof of successful completion of the NCHADFB exam would also meet the requirement.
  • A licensed supervisor may supervise no more than two assistants at any one time.

  • Not regulated

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting

ASHA Pathway: The ASHA C-SLPA is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure.

  • Register with Board
  • Associate's degree in speech-language pathology assisting or completion of a bachelor's degree, as well as courses in speech-language pathology assisting
  • 100 hours of supervised fieldwork
  • Jurisprudence exam
  • A licensed supervisor may supervise no more than two assistants at any one time.

School Setting

  • Register with Board
  • Associate's degree in speech-language pathology assisting or completion of a bachelor's degree, as well as courses in speech-language pathology assisting
  • Competency test
