The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of New York. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

  • Master’s degree with supervised practicum and supervised experience; or
  • Doctoral degree with supervised clinical experience

Audiologists who dispense hearing aids must be registered hearing aid dispensers

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • Supervised practicum
  • Supervised experience

Both

  • National exam

Continuing Education: 30 hours every three years

ASLP-IC: New York is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: Out-of-state licensed providers can provide services for no more than 30 days per calendar year and under the supervision of or in conjunction with a New York licensee.

      • College coursework: Artistic Expression, Communication, Information Retrieval, Humanities, Language other than English (including ASL), Written Analysis and Expression, Concepts in Historical and Social Sciences, Scientific Process, and Mathematical Processes
    • Content core: Speech and Language Disabilities - 30 semester hours
    • Pedagogical core: 21 semester hours
      • College coursework: Human Development and Learning; Teaching Students with Disabilities & Special Health-Care Needs; Teaching Literacy Skills Methods (three semester hours); Teaching Literacy Skills (three semester hours); Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment; Foundations of Education
    • Additional pedagogy: Speech and Language Disabilities - six semester hours
      • College coursework: Foundations of Special Education and assisting SLD students and teachers with teaching and learning of the general education curriculum
    • College supervised practicum: Speech and Language Disabilities - 150 clock hours
    • NYS Teacher Certification Exam - Educating All Students Test (EAS)
