The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Montana. Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s or doctoral degree
  • Clinical practicum
  • Clinical fellowship

Both

  • National exam
  • Jurisprudence exam

Continuing Education: 10 hours every year

ASLP-IC: Montana is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: No provisions.

A state license is required to work in Montana schools.

A state license is required to work in early intervention in Montana.

Assistants License Requirements

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • Audiology assistant applicants not currently licensed in another state or jurisdiction and who did not serve as unlicensed aides or assistants in Montana prior to January 1, 2024, must have either:
    • Bachelor’s degree;
    • Associate’s degree or audiology assistant certificate; or
    • High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 10 hours of additional board-approved training in audiology.
  • Audiology assistant applicants not currently licensed in another state or jurisdiction and who served as unlicensed aides or assistants in Montana prior to January 1, 2024, but do not meet the requirements must have a minimum of 110 hours of practical experience under the supervision of an audiologist.

School Setting: Audiology Aide/Assistant

  • High school diploma
  • Training to perform assigned tasks
  • Audiology Aide/Assistant 1 must complete 20 hours of continuing education annually. Audiology Aide/Assistant 2 and 3 must complete 10 hours annually.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting: Aides and Assistants

  • Board registration required by the aide/assistant supervisor
  • SLPA applicants not currently licensed in another state or jurisdiction and who did not serve as unlicensed aides or assistants in Montana prior to January 1, 2024, must have either:
    • Bachelor’s degree; or
    • Associate’s degree or SLPA certificate
  • SLPA applicants not currently licensed in another state or jurisdiction and who served as unlicensed aides or assistants in Montana prior to January 1, 2024, but do not meet the requirements must have a minimum of 690 hours of practical experience under the supervision of a speech-language pathologist

School Setting

  • High school diploma
  • The maximum number of assistants supervised by one professional may vary in relation to (a) tasks assigned to the assistant, (b) time limits imposed by the supervisory guidelines given below, and (c) time required of the professional in the direct provision of clinical services.
