The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Massachusetts. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Current ASHA Standards for Certification in Audiology or current requirements for Board Certification in Audiology from the American Board of Audiology

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • 2014 ASHA Standards for Certification or the then-current ASHA Standards for Certification in Speech-Language Pathology

Continuing Education: 20 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Massachusetts is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice. Providers must meet the following requirements:

  • Before providing telepractice services, a speech-language pathologist or audiologist must obtain 10 hours of training in telepractice in classroom courses or via distance learning.
  • The provider may begin a client relationship via telepractice following an in-person evaluation of the prospective client.
  • Prior to initiating telepractice services, the provider must document whether the client has the necessary knowledge and skills to benefit from telepractice and obtain informed consent for the services (including informing the client or guardian of their right to refuse telepractice services).
  • The provider must facilitate training of the use of telepractice equipment (if necessary).

Audiologist

  • State license

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Option 1:
    • State license
  • Option 2: Specialist Teacher – Speech, Language, and Hearing Disorders
    • Master's degree
    • Eligibility for clinical fellowship
    • Passing score on the Communication and Literacy Skills test
    • Completion of a clinical practicum consisting of 100 on-site hours in a public school or an approved private school setting
    • Adherence to the ASHA Code of Ethics

Continuing Education: 150 professional development points every five years

Audiologist

  • Master’s degree

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • State license

Both

Providers who work 20 hours or more per week must be certified as an Early Intervention Specialist by:

  • Submitting a portfolio that documents the ability to master the Early Intervention Specialist competencies
  • Completing a Department of Public Health Approved higher education program.

Audiology Assistant and Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • One of the following educational requirements:
    • Associate’s degree in audiology from an audiology/speech-language pathology training program
    • Bachelor's degree from a college with an assistant certificate program
    • Bachelor’s degree with a major in the area of audiology/speech-language pathology
    • Associate’s, bachelor’s, or advanced degree and 18 completed credit hours in coursework in audiology/speech-language pathology, six of which must be in disorders of speech, language or hearing
  • 20 hours of observation of clinical practice with a licensed audiologist
  • Supervisors must be licensed and have been practicing for two years and may supervise a maximum of three assistants at any given time
