ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • Clinical fellowship experience under a limited license

Both

  • National exam
  • Demonstrated oral competency
  • Criminal background check
  • Implicit bias training
  • Jurisprudence exam

Continuing Education: 30 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Maryland is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: Audiologists, SLPs, audiology assistants, and SLPAs licensed in another state may practice while their completed application for licensure is pending before the Board.

A state license is required to work in Maryland schools.

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist

  • State license
  • Met suitable qualifications [PDF] if 15% or more of their time is with eligible infants and toddlers and their families

ASHA Pathway: ASHA C-SLPA and C-AA are accepted as meeting requirements for assistants licensure.

Audiology Assistant

  • Licensure required
  • High school diploma or equivalent

A licensed audiologist may not supervise more than two audiology assistants at any time.

Additional Requirements

  • Demonstrated oral competency
  • Criminal background check

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

  • One of the following:
    • Licensure required with the Board
    • Associate’s degree from an approved program
    • Associate’s degree in an allied health field, with minimum coursework requirements
    • Bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology or communication science disorders
  • Completed 25 hours of clinical observation and 75 hours of clinical assisting experience

A full-time supervising SLP may not supervise more than two full-time SLPAs. A part-time supervising SLP may not supervise more than one full-time SLPA.

Additional Requirements

  • Criminal background check

Continuing Education: 10 hours every two years in specific areas designated by the Board
