ASHA Pathway:The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • Supervised clinical fellowship under a provisional license

Both

  • Supervised clinical practicum
  • National exam
  • Criminal background check

Continuing Education: 10 hours every year

ASLP-IC: Louisiana is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice:

  • The provider must be competent in both the type of services provided and the methodology and equipment used to provide the services.
  • The provider must use methods for protecting client information that include authentication and encryption technology.
  • It is the responsibility of the provider to ensure that the client is comfortable with the technology being utilized.
  • The client shall be notified of telehealth services, including the right to refuse telehealth services.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: Louisiana allows telehealth registration instead of licensure for out-of-state providers whose out-of-state audiology or speech-language pathology license does not require supervision, and is an unrestricted and unencumbered license in good standing, and the license is equivalent to the licensure standards in Louisiana.

A state license is required to work in Louisiana schools.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting: SLP Assistant

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 225-hour supervised clinical practicum, the first 100 of which shall have been obtained through a regionally accredited educational institution or its cooperating programs
  • Of the 100 hours obtained through a regionally accredited educational institution, 75 must be through direct patient/client contact; the remaining 25 hours may be obtained through observation of assessment and therapy
  • The supervising speech-language pathologist may not supervise more than three assistants or provisional assistants

Health Care Setting: SLP Aide

  • High school diploma or equivalent

School Setting

  • State license
  • Ancillary certification from the Department of Education
    • Bachelor's degree
    • 100 clock hours of supervised clinical practicum

Continuing Education: 10 hours every year for SLP Assistants
