The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Kentucky. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists who dispense hearing aids must obtain a hearing aid dispensers license

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • Supervised clinical fellowship under an interim license

Both

  • National exam

Continuing Education: 30 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Kentucky is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice. Services must be provided by using communication technology that is two (2) way, interactive, and simultaneously audio and video.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: An out-of-state practitioner that meets Kentucky qualifications and requirements, but is unlicensed, may perform services for up to five days. Contact the Kentucky Board for more information.

Audiologist

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master's degree
  • Completion of the following examinations:
    • Education of Exceptional Students - Core Content Knowledge
    • Speech-Language Pathology Exam

Continuing Education: Renewal of the professional certificate requires completion of six semester hours of credit or the equivalent in PSDUs or CEUs every five years

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist

  • State license
  • Online First Steps Service Provider Modules
  • First Steps Provider Face-to-Face Orientation

Upon completion of the enrollment training and signed provider agreement, First Steps providers must complete all training required by the Cabinet, including but not limited to the following: 

  • Training on at least one Cabinet-approved criterion referenced assessment within three months of the contract start date (HELP, AEPS, Carolina) 
  • First Steps online data management system (TOTS) training within 30 days from the contract start date
  • Training in Record Keeping and Confidentiality within 30 days of the date of the contract’s start date
  • Provider Matrix training within 30 days of the contract’s start date
  • A minimum of six clock hours of training specific to early childhood development at or before the end of contract period
  • First Steps Principles of Child Development module on Adobe will fulfill three hours addressing typical child development with the birth-to-three population; the remaining three hours are the provider’s choice and must target early intervention practices, be relative to the provider’s scope of practice or licensure, and have a birth-to-three focus
  • Training required by the State Lead Agency pertaining to the implementation of new regulations and procedures, including the First Steps Provider Consultative Model Curriculum.

Continuing Education 

  • Complete the required Record Keeping and Confidentiality module, six hours of training over the course of the two-year contract period, and anything required by the Cabinet regarding implementation of new regulations or procedures

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Nine months postgraduate professional experience

More than one supervisor may provide supervision of an interim speech-language pathology assistant. Supervisors may not supervise any more than two assistants.
