The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Iowa. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Master’s or doctoral degree

Audiologists who dispense hearing aids must obtain a hearing aid specialist license

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree

Both

  • Supervised postgraduate professional experience under a temporary license
  • Supervised clinical practicum
  • National exam

Continuing Education: 26 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Iowa is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice. The state also requires the following:

  • Prior to the first telehealth visit, a licensee shall obtain informed consent from the patient specific to the services that will be provided in a telehealth visit. At a minimum, the informed consent shall specifically inform the patient of the following:
    • The risks and limitations of the use of technology to provide speech pathology or audiology services
    • The potential for unauthorized access to protected health information
    • The potential for disruption of technology during a telehealth visit.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: Out-of-state practitioners who meet the same qualifications for an Iowa license may apply for a temporary permit to practice for a period not to exceed three months whenever in the opinion of the Board the need exists.

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist: Professional Services License

  • Master's degree
  • Completion of requirements in audiology/speech-language pathology and the professional education sequence—20 semester hours, including student teaching/internship as a school audiologist/SLP, and courses in the following areas: curriculum courses, foundations, educational measurements, educational psychology, special education, child development, and general education courses
  • Completion of an approved human relations course
  • The program must also include preparation that contributes to the education of individuals with disabilities, as well as the gifted and talented.

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist: Statement of Professional Recognition (SPR)

  • SPR from the Board of Educational Examiners
  • State license

Continuing Education: Professional Service License requires four credits every five years and the mandatory reporter training for child and dependent adult abuse. Holders of the SPR are required to maintain a current state license.

A state license is required to work in early intervention in Iowa.

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting: Unlicensed Audiology Assistant I or Audiology Assistant II

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three-semester-hour course in introductory audiology for audiology assistants
  • 15 hours of instruction in the specific tasks that the assistant will be performing or a training period of 75 clock hours on instruction and practicum experience
  • No more than three assistants may be supervised by a licensee unless approved by the Board.

School Setting

  • Not regulated

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting: Unlicensed SLP Assistant I or SLP Assistant II

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three-semester-hour course in introductory speech and language pathology for speech-pathology assistants
  • 15 hours of instruction in the specific tasks that the assistant will be performing or a training period of 75 clock hours on instruction and practicum experience
  • No more than three assistants may be supervised by a licensee unless approved by the Board.

School Setting

  • Regulated by the local education agency
