The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Illinois. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist 

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license but must comply with the law and rules of the Hearing Instrument Consumer Protection Program.  

Speech-Language Pathologist 

  • Master’s degree
  • Clinical practicum
  • Supervised clinical fellowship under temporary license

Both 

  • National exam

Continuing Education: 20 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Illinois is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice. The use of telephone, email, instant messaging, store and forward technology, or facsimile must be in conjunction with or supplementary to the use of video conferencing.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: Out-of-state license holders who have applied for an Illinois license may practice speech-language pathology or audiology for 90 days from the date of application or until Department disposition, whichever is sooner, if they have their CCC and provided there are no pending disciplinary matters elsewhere. Contact the Illinois board for more information.

Audiologist

  • State license

Speech-Language Pathologist: Professional Educator License with Speech-Language Pathology Endorsement

  • Option 1:
    • Master's or doctoral degree
    • 150 hours of supervised, school-based professional experience. The following experience shall be honored in lieu of an internship:
      • One year of professional experience in Pre-K-12 schools as a speech-language pathologist on a valid, comparable out-of-state certificate or license that allows the holder to work as a speech-language pathologist in that state's public schools
  • Option 2:
    • State license
    • ASHA CCC

Continuing Education: Maintenance of state license or ASHA CCC or 40–120 professional development hours every five years

Audiologist

  • State license
  • Enrollment in state billing system

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • State license
  • Enrollment in state billing system
  • Early Intervention System Overview training through Early Intervention Training Program (EITP)

Continuing Education: 30 hours every three years of EITP-approved continuing education

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

ASHA Pathway: The ASHA C-SLPA is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure. 

  • State license
  • One of the following:
    • Associate's degree from a program approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
    • Bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, or other content area from an accredited college or university approved by IDFPR and meeting specific coursework requirements
    • Complete requirements for certification as a speech-language pathology assistant or equivalent program determined by IDFPR
  • 100 hours of supervised field work
  • A full-time speech-language pathologist may supervise no more than two assistants. A part-time speech-language pathologist may supervise no more than one assistant.

Continuing Education: 10 hours every two years for state-licensed SLPAs only
