The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Georgia. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • Supervised postgraduate professional experience under a temporary license

Both

  • Supervised clinical practicum
  • National exam
  • U.S. citizenship or national status
  • Criminal background check

Continuing Education: 20 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Georgia is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: No provisions.

ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting all requirements for audiologists and some requirements for speech-language pathologists.

Audiologist: Professional certificate through one of the following options:

  • State license
  • Master’s degree from a Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC)-accepted accredited institution
  • Master’s degree from a state-approved certification preparation program

Speech-Language Pathologist: Professional Certificate

  • Complete one of the following:
    • State license
    • ASHA CCC
    • Master’s degree from a state-approved certification preparation program
    • Master’s degree from an ASHA-approved certification preparation program
  • Meet the Special Georgia Requirements:
    • Content knowledge assessment; and
    • Standards of Conduct

Continuing Education: One of the following:

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist

  • State license
  • Enrolled as a provider in Georgia’s Fee-for-service Medicaid/Peachcare for Kids Program
  • Enrolled as a provider with at least one Georgia Medicaid Care Management Organization within 60 days of contracting with Babies Can’t Wait

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • Register with the licensing board
  • Provide evidence of one of the following:
    • Two years of college education or an associate's degree from an accredited college
    • Completion of a technical school certification program in health care approved by the Board
    • Completion of an assistant program approved by the Board
  • Licensed supervisor must submit to the Board a description of a minimum of 40 hours of proposed instruction in the specific duties that the assistant will perform; the supervisor must then submit to the Board verification that the training was completed satisfactorily within 30 working days of the applicant's employment
  • Full-time supervisors may supervise two persons; part-time equals only one aid per supervisor.

School Setting: Paraprofessional

  • Have valid state certificate issued by the Professional Standards Commission (PSC) and must hold at least an associate's degree (in any subject); or
  • Completed two years of college coursework (60 semester hours); or
  • Passed a PSC-approved paraprofessional assessment. If eligibility is established through assessment, the applicant must also hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting: Speech-Language Pathology Aide

  • Register with the licensing board
  • High school diploma, GED certificate, or college transcript
  • Licensed supervisor must submit to the Board a description of a minimum of 40 hours of proposed instruction in the specific duties that the aide will perform; the supervisor must then submit to the Board verification that the training was completed satisfactorily within 30 working days of the applicant's employment
  • Full-time supervisors may supervise two persons; part-time equals only one aid per supervisor.

School Setting: Paraprofessional

  • Valid state certificate issued by the PSC and must hold at least an associate's degree (in any subject); or
  • Two years of college coursework (60 semester hours); or
  • Passage of a PSC-approved paraprofessional assessment. If eligibility is established through assessment, the applicant must also hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

School Setting: Speech-Language Associate

  • Bachelor’s degree and out-of-state professional certification at bachelor’s level; or
  • Passage of the Georgia Assessments for Certification of Educators exam and meet standards of conduct; or
  • Certification through GaPSC

Continuing Education: 10 hours per year for audiology assistants
