The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Connecticut. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree

Both

  • National exam
  • Supervised postgraduate professional experience registered with Board

Continuing Education: 20 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Connecticut is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: Out-of-state licensee may practice for a total of 30 days a year. Unlicensed persons from another state may provide services, provided they meet requirements for state licensure, and services are performed for no more than five days a year. Contact the state board for more information.

Audiologist

  • State license

Speech-Language Pathologist: Initial Educator Certificate

  • State license
  • Recommendation from a speech and language pathology preparation program, which includes the following coursework:
    • Three credit hours in curriculum and methods of providing clinical services to children with communication impairments in schools
    • Six credit hours in professional education, including coursework in such areas as:
      • Foundations of education
      • Psychology: child, educational, developmental, adolescent, or cognitive learning
      • Classroom instruction and management, bilingual/bicultural education, reading, curriculum development, or behavioral management
    • Six to 12 credit hours in supervised observation, participation, and full-time student teaching. Must include at least 100 clock hours of supervised clinical practice for a board of education
    • A course of study in special education comprising at least 36 clock hours that includes study in:
      • Understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education
      • Methods for identifying, planning for, and working effectively with special needs children in the regular classroom

Continuing Education: 30 hours every three years

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist

  • State license
  • Four-day service coordination training is required if the person will be acting as a service coordinator

ASHA Pathway: ASHA C-SLPA and C-AA are accepted as meeting requirements for assistants licensure.

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • Must work under the direct, on-site supervision of a licensed audiologist

School Setting

  • Not regulated

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • A licensed supervisor may not supervise more than three SLPAs at one time.

School Setting

  • Not regulated. Guidelines are provided for speech-language pathology aides and assistants in school settings.

Continuing Education: Not required
