The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Alaska. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure for audiologists. The ASHA CCC is required for SLPs.

Audiologist

  • Master’s or doctoral degree
  • ASHA CCC or equivalent

Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license but must comply with certain consumer practices.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • ASHA CCC

Both

  • Criminal background check
  • Alaska business license if practicing independently

Continuing Education: Not required

ASLP-IC: Alaska is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: The state may issue a temporary license to audiologists licensed in another state for up to 30 days. The state may issue a temporary license to SLPs licensed in another state for up to 60 days. Out-of-state providers must also register their businesses in the state. Contact the state board for more information.

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist: Special Services Certificate (Type C) Endorsed in Speech, Language, or Hearing Certificate

  • Master's degree or ASHA CCC
  • Recommendation for endorsement by an institution with a program approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education or ASHA
  • Three semester hours of approved Alaska studies
  • Three semester hours of multicultural education or cross-cultural communications 

Continuing Education: Six semester hours of credit or nine quarter hours of credit, earned from a regionally accredited university, are required every five years. At least three semester hours must be upper division or graduate-level credit.

Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist

  • State license
  • Completion of applicable sections of Part C Credential—in-service training credential required of all Alaska early intervention/Infant Learning Program employees

Audiology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • Not regulated

School Setting

  • Not regulated

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting

  • Register with the licensing board
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree
  • 100 hours of supervised field work under a licensed SLP
  • A supervisor may not supervise more than two assistants at one time.

School Setting

  • No additional requirements

Continuing Education: 15 hours biennially
