Audiology Related CPT Codes Enter Routine RUC Review Process

October 8, 2026

Update: October 8, 2026

The American Medical Association (AMA) is reviewing audiometric testing codes through its routine AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) review process. As part of this AMA review, ASHA is facilitating a survey of randomly selected audiologists on the AMA’s behalf. This is not an ASHA member survey or a review initiated by ASHA.

Survey invitations were scheduled to arrive from “noreply@qemailserver.com” on or around October 15, 2026. Members selected to participate should check their inbox and spam or junk folders.

These CPT code surveys collect practicing professionals’ input on how much time and skill is needed to perform a service or procedure. This code review is part of the routine AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) relativity assessment process and reflects codes identified through the RUC’s Relativity Assessment Workgroup and CMS review pathways. Members can learn more about the process on ASHA’s website.

Note: Per the survey methodology, survey lists are randomized to ensure integrity. Therefore, not all members will receive the survey. Recipients should not forward surveys to other clinicians as each survey link is specific to its recipient.

Over the next several months, a significant number of CPT codes used to report audiology function tests will undergo review through the AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) Health Care Professionals Advisory Committee (HCPAC) process. ASHA will be requesting survey responses from practicing audiologists who are selected at random to participate. The RUC HCPAC process is used to gather specialty input on the resources (time, intensity, and practice expense inputs) associated with furnishing these services, and the RUC HCPAC recommendations are then submitted to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for consideration in future Medicare payment policy.

This code review is part of the routine RUC relativity assessment process and reflects codes identified through the RUC’s Relativity Assessment Workgroup and CMS review pathways. Put simply, this review is not the result of any changes requested by the audiology profession but are part of the routine RUC/CMS review cycle for existing services.

ASHA encourages members to participate thoughtfully if contacted to complete a survey. Follow instructions included with the survey and read all materials thoroughly.

Members who would like additional background on the process may review the publicly available AMA RUC materials:
