U.S. House Passes Equality Act

February 25, 2021

ASHA applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Equality Act (H.R. 5). The Equality Act would amend federal law to ensure equality for LGBT individuals by forbidding public school students to be assigned to schools based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. In addition, it would require health care entities and programs that accept federal funds to not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. ASHA’s 2021 Public Policy Agenda specifically calls for advancing policies that reduce disparities in education and health care settings including those based on gender identity and sexual orientation. We look forward to the U.S. Senate taking up this important legislation in the near future.
