The ASHA Code of Ethics (2023) will be effective on March 1, 2023. Please join us in this live Zoom webinar to learn more about these changes and how they may affect your practice.

The ASHA Board of Ethics (BOE) is charged with periodically reviewing the Code of Ethics. The previous, comprehensive revision of the Code of Ethics occurred in 2016. Although the Code of Ethics is intended to be broad in scope, it is the view of the BOE that the language therein should reflect current issues that are important to the professions and to ASHA’s members and certificate holders.

The main purposes of the 2023 revisions were to clarify the language in the Code of Ethics and to address new ethical issues and concepts that have arisen over the past 5–7 years.

Some of the new changes we will be discussing include:

  • updated discrimination provisions that prohibit discrimination based on culture, language, dialect, and accent, and include the term “gender” under the list of protected classes;
  • new, broader provisions regarding the duty to practice with reasonable skill and safety;
  • a revised conflict of interest provision that sets forth the duty to disclose and manage conflicts if they cannot be avoided;
  • a new Rule regarding a supervisor’s responsibility to provide appropriate supervision and timely comply with all supervisory requirements;
  • new self-reporting timeframes that give individuals additional time to report and make it easier to provide documentation to the BOE; and
  • updated definitions in the Terminology section.

ASHA continuing education units (CEUs) and professional development hours (PDHs) are not offered for this event.
