Certification Standards Change in 2027

The Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC) has revised the ASHA Standards for the Certificate of Clinical Competence after an extensive process that reviewed Curriculum and Practice Analysis studies, current practice models, and peer review input from ASHA-certified professionals.

Effective Date for 2027 Standards

The 2027 Audiology Certification Standards and Speech-Language Pathology Certification Standards go into effect on August 1, 2027.

To prepare, please take some time to review the new standards and the crosswalk documents. The crosswalks compare the current 2020 standards to the upcoming 2027 standards and briefly explain the rationale for change.

Applications Under the 2020 and 2027 Standards

Individuals seeking ASHA certification must meet the requirements set forth in the applicable ASHA certification standards to be eligible to apply.

Applications for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) or Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) that are

currently in process—as well as applications received through July 31, 2027—must meet the 2020 standards; and
received on or after August 1, 2027, must meet the 2027 standards without exception.

Students: Applying for ASHA Certification

Requirements for Audiology Doctoral Students

Applying On or Before July 31, 2027

Students can apply for ASHA certification under the 2020 audiology certification standards by submitting an online application anytime after
- graduating from an AuD degree program (or its equivalency);
- completing the necessary coursework; and
- receiving the required doctoral degree from a CAA-accredited academic program or a program admitted to CAA candidacy.
For purposes of ASHA certification, your supervised clinical practicum hours must have been completed under an ASHA-certified audiologist who has met the requirements of Standard III. Any hours that you did not complete during your doctoral degree program may be completed post-graduation.
"Submitting an online application” on or before July 31, 2027, for ASHA certification means that you
- apply under—and must meet the requirements of—the 2020 audiology standards;
- enter your data (i.e., name, graduation date, school);
- pay your application and membership dues and fees; and
- click "Submit."
Additional documentation (transcripts and Praxis exam scores) can be submitted after application.

Applying On or After August 1, 2027

Students can apply for ASHA certification under the 2027 audiology certification standards by submitting an online application anytime after

Students can apply for ASHA certification under the 2020 SLP certification standards by submitting an online application anytime after
- completing the necessary coursework and practicum; and
- receiving the required master’s degree from a CAA-accredited academic program or a program admitted to CAA candidacy.
For purposes of ASHA certification, your supervised graduate clinical practicum hours must have been completed under the supervision of an ASHA-certified clinician who has met the requirements of Standard V-E.
"Submitting an online application” on or before July 31, 2027, for ASHA certification means that you
- apply under—and must meet the requirements of—the 2020 SLP standards
- enter your data (i.e., name, graduation date, school);pay your application and membership dues and fees; and
- click "Submit."
Additional documentation (transcripts and Praxis exam scores) can be submitted after application.
It is not necessary for you to have started or completed the Clinical Fellowship experience to apply for the CCC-SLP.

- graduating from a CAA-accredited program;
- completing the necessary coursework and practicum; and
- receiving the required master's degree from a CAA-accredited academic program or a program admitted to CAA candidacy.
For purposes of ASHA certification, your supervised graduate clinical practicum hours must have been completed under the supervision of an ASHA-certified clinician who has met the requirements of Standard V-E.
"Submitting an online application" on or after August 1, 2027, for ASHA certification means that you
- apply under—and meet the requirements of—the 2027 SLP standards;
- enter your data (i.e., name, graduation date, school);
- pay your application and membership dues and fees; and
- click "Submit."
It is not necessary for you to have started or completed the Clinical Fellowship experience to apply for ASHA certification.
