Description of Opportunity:

Act as Ambassadors of ASHA by providing advocacy on and communication about the priorities of the Association to officials, constituents, peers, and the general public at the workplace, local, state, and national levels. Members participate in self-initiated communications and advocacy activities throughout the year, in addition to 4 quarterly virtual meetings and participation in ASHA's annual Hill Day. Interested candidates must have a demonstrated interest in advocacy at the local, state or federal level.

Experience Required:

Affairs and Public Policy Board C-AA Position

Description of Opportunity:

The Government Affairs and Public Policy Board is charged with (a) developing the Association’s public policy agenda for adoption by the Board of Directors; (b) ensuring that the strategic needs and interests of ASHA members are represented in the Association’s public policy agenda; (c) providing ongoing coordination of communication with other ASHA committees, councils, boards, members, and state speech-language-hearing associations concerning the legislative, regulatory, and other public policy activities and initiatives of the Association; (d) making recommendations to and working with the National Office staff to develop strategies to achieve the public policy agenda of the Association; and (e) selecting an individual(s) to receive the ASHA Award for Public Service for the Board of Directors’ consideration and approval.

Interested candidates should have an expressed interest in government relations and public policy. Background in public policy, consumer advocacy, and reimbursement issues is preferred but not required.

Description of Opportunity:

Work to facilitate the ability of all ASHA members and certificate holders to enhance human communication by providing culturally competent services and to provide leadership, guidance, and strategic planning in reviewing, recommending, and developing ASHA policies, procedures, and programs that are responsive to cultural and linguistic influences, particularly those impacting historically underserved and underrepresented populations. These populations include but are not limited to individuals identified by race, ethnicity, culture, language, dialect, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, religion, socioeconomic status, and/or ability.

Interested candidates must have familiarity/experience responding to the influence of cultural and linguistic factors across the discipline including for example, service delivery, professional preparation, access to services, etc.

Description of Opportunity:

Make recommendations to and work with National Office staff to (a) develop strategies and initiatives to ensure appropriate coverage and reimbursement for audiology and speech-language pathology services to children in schools; (b) help ASHA members better identify and understand the complex and multiple funding processes involved in school-based services from federal, state, and local perspectives; (c) assure that the strategic finance needs and interests of both ASHA member audiologists and speech-language pathologists in school-based settings be considered and represented in the Association's annual public policy agenda; and (d) make referrals to other ASHA committees and boards for input, consideration, or action as appropriate on school finance issues of concern to ASHA members that relate to practice, research, academics, and credentialing activities of the Association.

Interested candidates must have an understanding of school funding mechanisms and willingness to provide perspective on reimbursement, staffing models, and service delivery practices.
