School Service Delivery: Practical Tools for Assessing Your Results (On Demand Webinar)
Format(s): On Demand Webinar, On Demand Webinar (Group)
CEUs:
0.2
2.0
All areas of speech-language pathology practice require practitioners to demonstrate their value and contributions with specific, measurable outcomes. Preschool and K-12 school settings are no exception. Indeed, the call for results-driven educational practices, systematic methods of measuring educational outcomes, and accountability has never been greater. This webinar will present practical tools for determining outcomes in school speech-language programs so SLPs can advocate with administrators, modify intervention practices, and improve communication with educators and parents. The framework emphasizes three interrelated areas of service delivery: (1) student outcomes, (2) interprofessional collaboration outcomes, and (3) systemic outcomes. Participants will focus on their own programs while learning to apply several practical outcomes-measurement tools – including satisfaction surveys, feedback forms, performance improvement plans, team assessments, progress monitoring, and more – that can improve their services for the benefit of their students.

Format(s): On Demand Webinar, On Demand Webinar (Group)
CEUs:
0.2
2.0
SLPs who work in preschool and K-12 school settings engage in interprofessional collaboration since they regularly partner with other professionals – teachers, assistants, school psychologists, occupational therapists, and others – to deliver services to students. In some cases, SLPs may find that these collaboration efforts could be enhanced. This webinar will present a fresh approach to planning and offering integrated, classroom-based services. The approach allows school clinicians to transform their programs by strengthening their relationships with fellow school professionals and improving the breadth, depth, and quality of collaboration that is already happening. The course will describe a unique, six-stage collaboration process that fosters a common frame of reference and meaningful relationships with education colleagues. Each stage incorporates a goal, ready-to-implement strategies, and interactive tools and resources SLPs can employ to encourage buy-in and engagement. Throughout the webinar, participants will be guided to think about the process from the perspective of their own role, organization, school culture, school partners, student population, services, and goals. Participants will create an action plan for reframing their own programs.

SLPs’ assessments and recommendations about a person’s inability to eat and drink by mouth can lead to the use of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube for feeding. But studies on PEG tubes have raised doubts about their long-term benefit as well as concerns about their overuse for providing artificial enteral nutrition. This course presents evidence-based information about dysphagia, aspiration, aspiration pneumonia, nutrition support, and the role of PEG tubes in caring for cognitively impaired elders. In addition to using this information to manage care for cognitively impaired patients, practitioners can extrapolate to other patient groups, such as stroke patients, for which the evidence base is inadequate.

Over the years, cochlear implant candidacy has changed dramatically. When devices were first introduced, only patients with little to no ability to recognize speech were considered. Advances in technology and evolving ideas about who can benefit from a cochlear implant have expanded the candidate pool, which now can include adults and children with greater preoperative residual hearing, nontraditional candidates (such as those with additional disabilities), and “off label” patients who do not meet the approved indications for the device but could benefit nonetheless (such as those with single sided deafness or asymmetrical, progressive hearing loss). This course will explain the candidacy changes in greater detail and provide guidelines to help professionals determine if a referral to a cochlear implant center is appropriate for a particular patient. The webinar will outline the roles of audiologists and SLPs in making these recommendations and will also discuss how to counsel patients regarding their possible candidacy for a cochlear implant.

SLPs and audiologists are trained to help people improve their communication abilities and functioning in daily life, and in doing this, they often need to address people's emotional well-being too. This webinar provides clinicians with basic information about counseling people of all ages who experience communication disorders, as well as their families, drawing on standard practice in counseling psychology. The session will introduce what counseling is and how counseling procedures relate to overall therapy for people with communication disorders. Participants will learn several specific counseling strategies to help them understand the client's (or family member's) perspective, provide helpful responses to clients' statements of emotion, and support clients in taking responsibility for changes in treatment. Other topics include: the nature of the emotional reactions clients may experience, how to further develop your counseling skills, and, in particular, which aspects of the counseling process are within the SLP's and audiologist's scope of practice and which situations should be referred to other professionals.
