Licensing Requirements for Audiologists, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Speech-Language Pathology Assistants

The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of speech-language pathology and/or audiology. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

Initial Licensure

Audiology

Possess a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) issued by ASHA as evidence of professional training and experience.

Speech-Language Pathology

Possess a current Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) issued by ASHA as evidence of professional training and experience.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistants

SLPA-B: possess at least a bachelor's degree in speech and language or communication disorders and shall work under the direct or indirect supervision of a licensed SLP.

SLPA-M: Possess at least a master’s degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders and may work under the direct or indirect supervision of a licensed SLP.

Exemptions

  1. Licensees engaging in the profession for which they are licensed
  2. Students
  3. Clinical Fellows or fourth-year interns

Continuing Education

Audiologists:

  • earn 30 credit hours every 2 years
  • show proof of current CCC

Speech-language pathologists:

  • earn 30 credit hours, with a minimum of 20 hours directly related to the practice, every 2 years.
  • show proof of current CCC

SLPA-B must submit proof of 15 continuing education directly related to the practice every two years.

SLPA-M must submit proof of 20 continuing education hours, which includes 15 must directly related to the practice, every two years.

Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact

Guam is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact. Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.
