The Search for ASHA's Next CEO

Update: ASHA's Next CEO Announced (October 5, 2021)

Following the announcement that ASHA CEO Arlene Pietranton will be retiring at the end of 2021, it is important for ASHA members to be informed about the search that is underway for ASHA’s next CEO: how it is being conducted, by whom, and with what degree of emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

According to ASHA Bylaws (section 6.2), the selection of a new CEO is an ASHA Board of Directors responsibility. As such, ASHA President Lynn Williams, PhD is chairing an ASHA Board search committee. The current Board is among the most diverse ASHA has ever had and they fully understand the importance of choosing a demonstrated equity champion for being ASHA’s next CEO.

The strong emphasis on DEI extends to SpencerStuart, the search firm that has been identified by an ASHA Board subcommittee to assist with the ASHA CEO search. The firm has an established track record of addressing DEI in their search process.

CEO Position Description Now Available (June 23, 2021)

As indicated in the CEO Search Timeline, the CEO position description [PDF], created with input from stakeholder interviews, the ASHA Board, and the CEO Search Subcommitee, is now publicly posted. Recruitment industry best practices include maintaining strict confidentiality about candidates and information related to their candidacies. All information about candidates must and will be held in strictest confidence. Also, multiple stakeholders, including each of ASHA’s seven multicultural constituency groups, have been asked to share their perspectives about the search to the ASHA Board and SpencerStuart.
