Licensing Requirements for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists

The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of speech-language pathology and/or audiology. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

Initial Licensure

Audiology/Speech-Language Pathology

  1. Have obtained a master's degree or doctorate in speech-language pathology or audiology, as applicable, in a school accredited by the Council of Higher Education, if it operates in Puerto Rico, or in an institution recognized by the Board, if it is located in any of the states of the United States, the District of Columbia or in another country.
  2. Pass the required exam
  3. Have resided in Puerto Rico during the last six (6) months prior to the date of the license application.
  4. Comply with the year of public service in the health facility following a plan for the development, organization and distribution of resources for the provision of health services in Puerto Rico, after consultation and advice with the Secretary of Health, including those entities representing the affected people and private people.

Note: A speech-language therapist must have obtained bachelor's degree in speech therapy or its equivalent from a university accredited by the Council of Higher Education, if it operates in Puerto Rico, or from an institution recognized by a national accrediting body, if it is located in any of the states of the United States of America, or recognized by the Board, if it is located in another country.

Reciprocity

The Board may establish reciprocal relations for licensed speech-language pathologists, audiologists or therapists.

Interim Practice

The Board will issue a provisional license to an applicant who meets all the requirements except the examination.

Continuing Education

Audiologists/Speech-Language Pathologists: Thirty hours of continuing education is required every three years. A minimum of twenty hours must be in-person. Two hours of cultural competence in LGBTTIQ populations is required.

Speech-Language Therapists: Twenty-five hours of continuing education is required each renewal period. A minimum of fifteen hours must be in-person. Two hours of cultural competence in LGBTTIQ populations is required.

Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact

Puerto Rico is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact. Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.
