Continuing Education Credits for Student Supervision
On the SLP Health Care Survey 2007, respondents were asked the following question: "What are the three incentives that would most encourage you to supervise a student in the next 12 months?"
By far, the most commonly selected answer was "CE credit for supervision", followed by "financial incentive" and "reduced caseload/productivity requirement."
There are a number of ways that SLPs can earn continuing education credits as a part of the supervisor experience, including:
- The university that is sending the students may offer courses on supervision or clinical topics at reduced cost or for free to externship supervisors. If this is not offered, talk to the university and ask about the feasibility of such a plan.
- Develop your own Independent study with specific goals related to the supervisor experience.
Remember, to maintain your CCCs, you must accumulate 30 hours of professional development every 3 years. These hours do not have to come solely from programs offering ASHA CEUs. State licensure maintenance regulations vary; consult your state board for more details.
