Research Symposium at ASHA Convention
Purpose
The Research Symposium aims to bring together clinicians and researchers at ASHA's annual Convention, in order to discuss current research that has important implications for the study of communication processes and disorders. Each year's symposium focuses on a specific research theme. Research is presented by invited speakers who are experts in their fields.
The Research Mentoring-Pair Travel Award (RMPTA) is offered in conjunction with this program, in order to provide a research mentoring experience to students who show promise as emerging scientists. This award provides $1,000 to mentor-protégé pairs, intended to offset some of the cost of attending the Symposium (and annual ASHA Convention).
The Symposium and travel awards are co-sponsored by ASHA and the National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorder (NIDCD), through an R13 grant awarded to ASHA. The Symposium as an annual program started in 1990. The Symposium is planned and coordinated by the Research Symposium Planning Committee and ASHA's Academic Affairs and Research Education unit.
Participants
The Symposium is open to all attendees of the ASHA annual Convention who are interested in current research.
Format
The Symposium consists of several talks related to a central research issue with opportunities for discussion between clinicians, junior investigators and senior investigators. In addition, RMPTA recipients attend a luncheon with a keynote speaker. Proceedings from previous Symposia are published in the Journal of Communication Disorders.

How to Attend
The Symposium is scheduled for November 19, 2011, at ASHA's Annual Convention in San Diego, California. Any Convention attendee may attend. Attendees are welcome for the entire day or individual Symposium sessions.
