The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is the professional, scientific, and credentialing association for more than 130,000 members and affiliates who are audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists.
Our mission is: "To promote the interests of and provide the highest quality services for professionals in audiology, speech-language pathology, and speech and hearing science, and to advocate for people with communication disabilities"
Some of the activities the Association is involved in are:
- Advocating for those with communication disorders
- Certifying individuals for practice
- Accrediting graduate-level education programs
- Developing policy documents on current practice issues
- Providing continuing education opportunities
- Publishing professional journals
- Collecting data and conducting research in the discipline/professions
ASHA also represents the speech-language pathology and audiology professions in both the American Medical Association (AMA) Relative Value Update Committee (RUC) and the AMA CPT Editorial Panel. The ASHA Health Care Economics Committee (HCEC) coordinates recommendations from ASHA members and related organizations in developing new procedures for adoption by the CPT Editorial Panel. The Committee also conducts surveys and holds consensus panel meetings to develop data that are presented to the AMA and CMS to develop fees.
