Demographics

The term "American Indian and Alaska Native" refers to people having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South American (including Central America), and who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment. The 2005 American Community Survey estimates that the United States population was 288.4 million. Of the total, 4.2 million, or 1.4 percent, reported American Indian and Alaska Native. This number included 2.4 million people, or 0.8 percent, who reported only American Indian and Alaska Native in addition to 1.8 million people, or 0.6 percent, who reported American Indian and Alaska Native as well as one or more other races. [1]

Educational Statistics

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, approximately 1.2% of students enrolled in elementary and secondary schools in the Fall of 2003 were American Indian/Alaska Native. [7] The US Census Bureau indicates that 23% of American Indian and Alaska Native only children ages 5-17 speak a language other than English. [8]
