New Certification Reinstatement Policy and Procedures for Audiology

Effective September 1, 2009

After a lapse in certification, individuals applying for reinstatement must meet the following 2009 Certification Reinstatement Policies and Procedures.*

Seeking Reinstatement–Certification Standards Have Not Changed

If seeking reinstatement when current certification standards are the same as those in effect when certification lapsed, applicants must submit:

  • Reinstatement form (contact the ASHA Action Center at 800-498-2071 to request), signed by the applicant and a colleague holding current ASHA certification in audiology. While the individual does not have to supervise the applicant, the recommending individual should be someone who has familiarity with the applicant's knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Reinstatement fee.
  • Evidence of professional development hours based on the number of years lapsed (i.e., 1 year=10 hours of professional development; 2 years=20 hours; 3 or more years=30 hours). Professional development activities must have been completed prior to submission of the reinstatement application form and must have been completed no more than 3 years prior to submitting the application for reinstatement.

  • Confirmation via official notification from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) of successful completion of the Praxis examination in Audiology, achieved no more than 5 years prior to submission of the reinstatement application—successful completion is defined as achieving a passing score based on the standard in effect when the application for reinstatement is submitted. The current passing score is 600.

Professional Development for Reinstatement

  • Acceptable activities must have been completed no more than 3 years prior to submission of the reinstatement application form.
  • Activities should address the provision of clinical services specific to the professions of speech-language pathology and/or audiology.
  • Courses and activities that are in related areas, are general in nature, or are not related specifically to the practice of speech-language pathology and/or audiology will not be accepted.

Maintenance of Certification

Once certification has been granted, all certificate holders must be aware that maintenance of certification is accomplished through abiding by the ASHA Code of Ethics, annual payment of ASHA dues or the annual certification fee, and accrual of 30 hours of professional development every three years.

Audiology Reinstatement as of January 1, 2012

Please note that because Audiology Certification Standards will change on January 1, 2012, you will then have to submit an official transcript confirming the receipt of a doctoral degree.
