BHSM Stories: The Speech, Language and Hearing Association of the Hudson Valley (SHAHV)
Upstate New York
In recognition of Better Hearing and Speech Month, the Speech, Language and Hearing Association of the Hudson Valley (SHAHV) planned many activities with a focus on information sharing with families, clients and the public at large. BHSM was kicked off with our participation at the local Autism Walk in Rhinebeck, New York. SHAHV manned a booth with information to families and professionals alike. Next, brochures on communication development were distributed to local doctor's offices and ASHA coloring books were given to local restaurants for the children. We did more in the media this year than before. Our BHSM Committee Chairperson, Jenny Thayer, went on one of our local radio stations to help people understand what speech-language pathologists and audiologists do and help them understand communication disorders in general. Public service announcements were also distributed to all local radio stations. This was our second year donating books to our local library system. SHAHV donated 15 books on communication related topics this year alone. Displays were set up in 3 local libraries. SHAHV teamed up with Barnes & Noble in Kingston to sponsor a Book Fair in support of the Ulster Literacy Association. Based on sales, the Ulster Literacy Association received 10-20% of the profit from any product sold except gift certificates. SHAHV also held a special story-time at Barnes & Noble. SHAHV members read a story while signing it and the children got to make puppets to act the story out. A display was set up there as well. To end our month-long activities, SHAHV participated in the Multiple Sclerosis walk in Goshen, New York. The team raised over $950 to support their efforts. We are very proud of our BHSM committee. Excellent job all!
