BHSM Stories: Columbus Speech and Hearing Center
I am a speech-language pathologist that works at the Columbus Speech & Hearing Center
, a non-profit United Way member agency. To celebrate BHSM this year, we decided to "spread the word" about who we are and what we do.
We developed a monthly calendar with therapy ideas, informational tidbits, etc. that we are supplying our clients and families. The goal is to help the parent or caregiver support the child's speech and language every day of the month.
We also allowed clients and families to provide positive feedback about our therapists and how they exemplify our Center's Core Values (Excellence, Respect, Integrity, Teamwork, and Compassion). This will not only allow our staff to reflect and grow towards our Core Values, but also allow them to hear the differences they are making in people's lives. What an impact!
Columbus Speech & Hearing Center really hit one out of the park when baseball great Cal Ripken, Jr. came center stage as keynote speaker for Great Communicators held May 6, 2008 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. This annual event, now in its 17th year, underscores the importance of communication in the life of every individual and supports the programs and services of Columbus Speech & Hearing Center.
Client testimonies provided insight into how the Center's programs and caring staff have enriched the lives of others. In his presentation, Ripken expounded on his career in baseball and shared how the game of baseball is all about communication, both verbal and non-verbal.
Ripken talked about his "love of the game" and help to put the spotlight on many and varied programs of Columbus Speech & Hearing Center including audiology services, speech and occupational therapy, education and programs created specifically to assist those who are Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing and Deaf-Blind.
Since its beginning in 1992, Great Communicators has raised nearly $2.4 million for the programs and services of Columbus Speech & Hearing Center. Columbus Speech & Hearing Center is grateful to Huntington Bank and its many supporters for contributing to the success of Great Communicators.
