North Dakota Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

The information below has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

  1. Master's degree in audiology
  2. One hundred hours of school-based practicum

Continuing Education Requirement

Four semester hours every 5 years.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Restricted Certificate in Speech Therapy

  1. Master's degree in speech-language pathology or communications disorder from a program accredited by ASHA
  2. One hundred hours of school-based practicum

Continuing Education Requirement

Four semester hours every 5 years.

Note: Applications for renewal of the bachelor level SLP license will be denied after July 1, 2010.

None

Support Personnel

A speech-language pathology paraprofessional (SLPP) may only provide speech-language pathology paraprofessional services under the direct control of a supervising speech-language pathologist.

SLPPs must have either:

  1. On or before October 1, 2003, have a BA in speech, language pathology or communication disorders and at least 100 clock hours of supervised field-related experience;
    or
  2. Have completed an associates or BA degree which incorporates:
    a. 30 hours of general college education
    b. 30 hours of college education in the area of speech, language pathology
    c. 100 clock hours of supervised field-related experience
