A practice analysis and curriculum study for the profession of speech-language pathology is currently underway. Academic programs still have opportunity to participate in this study, if you have not done so already, and will receive a copy of the survey instrument in mid-September 2009. This is your chance to provide input regarding the learning outcomes for graduates of CAA-accredited graduate programs in speech-language pathology.
The Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC) and the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) have partnered with ASHA to develop and conduct this study, last completed in 1997. A Subject Matter Expert Panel, which included a broad representation of expertise and practice settings, was established to develop the survey. The survey underwent a pilot review and minor modifications were made to the instrument based on the feedback received. The survey was fielded in mid-June 2009 to a widespread audience representative of the profession of speech-language pathology.
The CAA extends its sincere gratitude to all of the speech-language pathologists, both academic and clinical educators, as well as practitioners, who completed the Web-based survey instrument. Your participation and contributions are extremely valuable in further defining the practice of speech-language pathology. The survey will close in late September and the data will be analyzed by our external consultant. A preliminary report will be shared with the CAA and CFCC by late Fall 2009, with a final report completed by early 2010.
The results of this study will inform the CAA and CFCC on academic and clinical standards for the profession of speech-language pathology, as well as the content and weighting of the national Praxis examination. One of the outcomes of the SLP analysis will be to ensure that the scope and level of education is consistent with the current scope of practice for the profession.
