In reference to Dr. Noma Anderson's remarks in her speech at the ASHA Convention in Boston, Nov. 17, 2007 (which appeared in The ASHA Leader, Dec. 26, 2007), in response to "some individuals assert that Standard American English should be the official national language" and her ensuing remarks, making English the official language of the United States does not deny anyone from communicating in the language of his/her choice. But if a person lives in the United States and wishes to be a citizen therein, that person should learn to communicate in English.
And following that, if as SLPs we are teaching our clients to communicate in a literate manner in English, we and ASHA should endorse and support making English the official language of the United States.
Legislation for this matter has been introduced in Congress.
